On the Binary Concept of Politics
09. June 2018 at 15:15
The Philippines is currently in a state of political divide more prevalent than it is has been for so many years. It is a battle of reds versus yellows, but this time, the reds are not leftists but the supporters of the president himself. What future will this bring for the Philippines? -- And what more can it take?
The Philippines is currently in a state of political divide more prevalent than it is has been for so many years. It is a battle of reds versus yellows, but this time, the reds are not leftists but the supporters of the president himself. What future will this bring to the Philippines? -- And what more can it take?

Red was the color of leftists. The so-branded "terrorist groups" who salvage innocent civilians for the sake of political delineation. But ever since Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte came to office, red became his color. He once vowed to make peace amendments with the leftist group, but just in 2017, he ceased the peace talks. Some say it's had to be done while some say it was a mission failure.

Yellow was the color of the Aquinos from the world-renowned Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., a famous political figure who fought against the Marcoses from dictatorship to the eldest daughter of Ninoy and wife Corazon "Cory" Aquino, Kris Aquino.

One might question how these reds and yellows are creating a political divide. The truth is, the divide is only brought about by a few people who think that every battle is won in a black and white situation. The people support their emblems of truth may it be because of loyalty or blind fellowship.

As a journalist, my role is to reveal the two sides of the story. I believe that political divide is not the answer and it never will be. In order to move forward, we must all be headed towards the same direction. Nowadays, the Filipinos are blinded by their personal discretion and opinions over an issue. The political divide is a figment of the imagination. It is a not a real barrier, but a barrier we made for ourselves in order to create a group to put the blame on at the end of each day.

So my message to my countrymen, our battle is not the reds versus yellows. It is beyond petty civil competitions, but it is for the betterment of our country. To label yourselves is to choose a side, but maybe a side is not necessary. We share our opinions, we share our thoughts, we talk and communicate with our country and not against our countrymen.
