Voluntary blood donation is a great service. The great step of a blood donor can save a lot of dying life. The practice of donating blood came up as a great hand for patients of the world. But in our society there are some wrong concepts on blood donation. Removing the wrong concepts, as much the people will come forward that much the world will be benefitted. According to the rules of World Health Organization, a person with a good health is allowed for voluntary blood donation. But after meeting some conditions of blood donation, a donor can donate blood in regular interval.

Considering, the body weight of an adult person has five liters of blood in average. 500mm blood is taken in each blood donating session. Within 24 hours to 48 hours after blood donation, bone marrow produces new blood to recover the loss. The viability of red blood corpuscles is 120 days. Thus in each four month new blood is produced in the body. So, without wasting blood, it can be donated in interval of four month. Because of donating blood, the blood producing organs remain active. Thus, regular blood donation reduces the risks of getting affected from many complex diseases.

There are many wrong concept in this matter in our society. One of them is vegetarians cannot donate blood willingly. The concept is not correct in a body. Mainly, in the blood of vegetarians, the amount of iron is comparatively less, thus, the physicians forbid them to donate blood in some aspects. Generally, it is assumed that, in the food of vegetarians the amount of iron is much less. But if the person takes balanced diet properly, the possibility of this threat becomes negative. There is no problem in donating blood if the amount of iron in the blood is in the correct ratio. For this reason in many countries, before donating blood, the amount of Ferro protein substance Hemoglobin is checked. If the amount of hemoglobin is less or any sign of anemia is seen, the person is not allowed to donate blood. If there is no kind of problem like this, the person is welcomed to donate blood like others.

Sick, pregnant, child or age old persons are discouraged in this regard. Those persons having HIV positive, hepatitis, TB or any other blood contaminated disease are not allowed to donate blood. They also cannot donate blood who has cold, fever, dry cough or stomach problem. Coming up from any disease a person cannot donate blood up to 14 days. If anyone is having antibiotics, he will be allowed to donate a week after completing the course of the medicines. For other medicines, different countries have different policies. If a women is pregnant, breast feeding or done abortion cannot donate blood unless the amount of iron in her blood is in right amount. They have to wait for it. There is no age limit for a blood donor. In some countries, it is 60-70 years of age.

According to the order of World Health Organization, those persons with ‘Risky Sexual Behavior or Activity’, as like sexually intimacy with many, sex in exchange of economic benefit or homosexuality may have problem in donating blood. In this case, after severe blood test they may be allowed to donate blood. Those who take drugs with injection cannot donate blood. An immigrant for a country where malaria, dengue or zica virus has been a huge threat, cannot donate blood. In many countries, those people cannot donate blood who are engaged in risky job. Giving much importance in this case may raise a serious discrimination in our society.
